Ananias and Sapphira lied about donating money to the church. They were both confronted by Peter at a church meeting and dropped down dead - killed for challenging the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit). This sort of striking, immediate divine judgement is not new and can be seen in the Old Testament. Over and over in Scripture this sort of capital punishment makes an impression on God's people so that they refrain from sin. God is not simple; He is complex, and He loves both redemption and discipline.
